Abstract
This article traced the attitude of Shuwa Arab towards western education in
Borno province. The study reflects on their culture, religion and gender as
factors responsible for their attitude towards western education. When
Borno Provincial was inaugurated in 1915, some young men and women of
Shuwa Arab Origin were attracted to western education at first, but the fear
of conversion to Christianity by Christian missionary who were at the helm
of affairs of the schools made them to have lukewarm attitude towards the
western education at the initial stage. But at a later stage having
understood that those with western education looked at illiterate class with
contempt, thus, the appeal to embrace the western education was developed
and adopted by the Shuwa Arab populace. It is therefore, recommended
that, the educated elites among the Shuwa Arab society should encourage
their brethrento embrace western education. The Boron State Government
should also made it mandatory for all and sundry to embrace western
education in this 21stCentury and beyond.
